This post was inspired by The Phrase A Week newsletter I received this afternoon.

The idiom #2 – a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush – is very easy to learn because it’s similar to the Czech one. But while in English, the important thing is the number of the birds (one is worth two), in Czech it is the bird species.

It’s said the phrase originated in Latin in the 13th century: Plus valet in manibus avis unica quam dupla silvis, but some linguists have different theories.
An asnwer to the idiom might be:  ”A bird in the hand is good, but a bird in the bush might sing.”
